ABOUT FRANK

Frank BurkittBorn and raised in the Scottish Highlands, Frank Burkitt started his musical career paying tribute to the legendary Frank Sinatra with the Inverness based ‘Root-Ma-Toot Big Band’. After moving to Edinburgh however, Frank adopted ‘The Royal Oak’ as his local. Soon after, he swapped the Big Bands for the Sessions, the ‘Jack Daniels’ for the ‘Laphroaig’ and began immersing himself in Edinburgh’s vibrant Folk music scene. After being bowled over by the stories, the honesty and the emotion (not to mention the music) of the scene – he soon realized that his songwriting must pay homage to this fantastic genre.

Since his conversion to Folk, Frank has written a catalogue of songs in his inimitable contemporary folk style. Frank credits the likes of ‘Flook’, ‘Tim O’Brien’ and ‘James Taylor’ amongst his biggest influences, though he still clings unabashedly to hints of his swing roots.

In early 2008, Frank recorded his first major album ‘A Little Less Care’ - featuring Chris Stone (Fiddle), Holly Downes (Double Bass), Chris Silver (Bouzouki) and Kara Filbey (Vocals). The band embarked on a couple of “mini tours” around Scotland in 2007 and 2008. In May/April 2009, Frank was joined once again by Stone and Downes on a tour of New Zealand and South Australia before returning to continue his 2009 summer tour of the UK.

Frank is also one of the co-presenters of 'The Garden Sessions', an Edinburgh based online "folk portal" which has been going now since early 2006 - with a free fortnightly internet radio show (or Podcast) as well as free folk downloads, News, Reviews, Lyrics and all things folk. Frank has attained the number 1 slot on ‘The Official Garden Sessions FREE Download Chart’ on several occasions with his song ‘Military Band’ – putting him up there with many of the rising (and established) stars of the Scottish folk scene such as Andy Chung and Lori Watson. www.gardensessions.co.uk
