ABOUT FRANK
Born
and raised in the Scottish Highlands, Frank Burkitt has
been writing songs and performing for over 10 years now.
Frank has an unrivalled ability to effortlessly churn
out classic Folk songs. Since moving to Edinburgh, Frank
has completed a degree in Acting from Queen Margaret University
– he is indeed, more than just a singer/songwriter,
but an all round performer. Heavily influenced by the
Edinburgh Folk scene, he combines the traditional Scottish
sound with his own inimitable blues style. His repertoire
varies from anti war ballads such as ‘Military Band’,
to energetic love songs like ‘Safe and Sound’
and ‘Glory Be’. His tributes to Edinburgh’s
“real” pubs such as ‘Old Timer’,
‘Murphy’ and ‘A Fine Drink’ are
a nod in the direction of the drinking dens which have
inspired his music – Edinburgh’s ‘Royal
Oak’ and ‘Sandy Bells’. Frank is an
acoustic musician with a big sound.
Frank is also one of the
co-presenters of 'The Garden Sessions', an Edinburgh based
online "folk portal" which has been going now
since early 2006 - with a free fortnightly internet radio
show (or Podcast) as well as free folk downloads, News,
Reviews, Lyrics and all things folk. Frank has attained
the number 1 slot on ‘The Official Garden Sessions
FREE Download Chart’ on several occasions with his
song ‘Military Band’ – putting him up
there with many of the rising (and established) stars
of the Scottish folk scene such as Andy Chung, Jim Malcolm
and the Lori Watson 3. www.gardensessions.co.uk
Between 2005 and 2007,
Frank has recorded 2 albums through the Garden Sessions,
the first was simply entitled ‘The Garden Sessions’
and the second ‘SpeakEasy’. According to the
Garden Sessions “Burkitt redefines what folk music
is all about” and Edinburgh based open mic night
‘Out Of The Bedroom’ said “The common
bonds in his songs are seamless, all of us (in our own
way) want to get there."
Since finding fellow musicians
Chris Stone (Fiddle), Holly Downes (Bass) and Chris Silver
(Bouzouki), it could be said that Frank has truly found
his sound. Together with Stone’s masterful arrangements,
Frank’s music has evolved from the more sparse beginnings
of his earlier recordings – and whilst retaining
it’s trademark honesty, is backed up by a beautiful
wall of sound. It is this culmination of musical talents
that led to the recording of Frank’s first major
album ‘Little Less Care’ (released May 2008),
produced by Chris Stone at Castlesound Studios near Edinburgh.
Frank said “Finding Chris and Holly was a major
breakthrough and produced a great album, hopefully this
will be the first of many”.
